LANDMARK STUDENT INNOVATORS SET FOR HULT PRIZE PITCHING CHALLENGE
In preparation for the upcoming global and regional rounds of the Hult Prize competition, the Student Development Office organized the final On-campus Hult Prize pitching challenge on Saturday, February 3rd, 2024, at the International Conference Centre. The On-campus Hult Prize pitching challenge not only showcased the ingenuity and dedication of student teams but also underscored the importance of collaborative efforts in driving positive change on a global scale.
The Hult Prize competition, themed "UNLIMITED," attracted eight dynamic teams, each presenting their unique solutions to pressing global issues. The participating teams included Rawcycling, Scarce, SynthX, LearnConnect, Bio-Cann, Nextverse, Aims-P, and God's Tech. With the theme emphasizing boundless creativity, teams approached the challenge with diverse perspectives and innovative ideas.
In line with the Hult Prize outlined criteria for grading the ideas presented by students which include a balanced and interactive pitch, relevance, disruption, and alignment with the SDGs, a committed and diverse team, and a thorough business model with measurable impact, three runner-up teams emerged as the final qualifiers for the upcoming regional competition. These are Team Rawcycling with an integrated waste-to-wealth platform where solid wastes are collected from environments/ households in exchange for financial tokens and sold to recycling firms; Team Scarce with an aggregate E-commerce platform where customers confirm the authenticity of ordered items amongst others to avoid being disappointed thereby losing grip of customers; and Team SynthX with an Incorporating artificial Intelligence for a more accurate X-ray diagnosis of ailments (radiology) and also cover up for redundancy and high attrition/scarcity of medics (radiologist). The judges highlighted areas for improvement, urging the teams to refine their pitches by enhancing storytelling, conducting more extensive market research, clarifying their presentations, developing prototypes, and ensuring accurate financial projections.
According to the Student Development Officer, Mr Daniel Emmanuel, “Prior to the competition, an insightful onboarding and orientation program was organised to acquaint the teams with Hult Prize's mission of addressing societal challenges through innovative solutions aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). He noted further that his Office is committed to working closely with the teams to refine their pitches in preparation for the regionals, slated to take place in the coming months. He expressed optimism that the students would shine not only at the regional but globally also, continuing the tradition of excellence and innovation set forth by previous competitions.
