EXTRA MILE AFRICA TO PARTNER WITH LANDMARK UNIVERSITY
The Management of Landmark University led by the acting Vice-Chancellor Professor Charity Aremu on Wednesday 2nd March, 2022 received the Extra Mile Africa and held a meeting deliberating on possible partnership in cassava cultivation.
The acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Charity Aremu stated that it is essential to bring relevant people on board. These people, according to her, would help in driving the agrarian mandate of the institution. Addressing the Extra Mile team, she noted that the meeting is expected to yield positive result, adding that Landmark University’s mandate crops are cassava and rice; therefore, the Extra Mile’s proposed partnership with Landmark is apt.
Being a crop breeder, Professor Aremu shared her experiences on the cultivation of cassava and rice in Landmark University while assuring the team of the success of the project if embarked upon. “Looking at the yield trajectory on cassava in Africa, Nigeria stands out at records; the yield of cassava for Zimbabwe, Kenya and Ghana cannot measure up with what Nigeria has. Even in Landmark University, we have been able to measure up to that, in the last CAVA II project we did, we had nothing less than 20 tonnes per hectare”, the acting Vice-Chancellor revealed when taking the team through the University’s records in Cassava Production.
The Chief Executive Officer Extra Mile Africa, Mr. Yemi Bankole while presenting the proposal, stated that the cassava partnership project with Landmark University will be cultivated on a forty-hectare parcel of land. While the University provides land, machinery, personnel and security, Extra Mile Africa on the other hand, will provide capital, supervise and provide market for the produce. According to Mr. Bankole, Extra Mile Africa is in partnership with IITA and other institutions within and outside the country such as Kenya, Ghana and South Africa. He expressed optimism that the project will go beyond this phase.
