2024 CAREER EXPOSITION AND FAIR LANDMARK EQUIPS STUDENTS FOR FUTURE WORK
The 2024 Career Exposition & Fair (2nd Edition) was one of the university’s intentional efforts to help its final-year students launch their careers and prepare for the world of work. Hosted by the Student Affairs Directorate, through the Student Development Office, this annual event took place within the university and was open to all students. The management of the University led by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kolawole Ajanaku was elated by the initiative and was present at the event to support and encourage the students towards maximizing the rare opportunities inherent in such gathering.
This annual event, themed "The Future of Work: Skills & Competencies” featured presentations from veteran professionals within Nigeria's Human Resource Management sector, who provided insights into the evolving job market. Their goal was to transform students into competitive talents ready for employment both nationally and internationally.
The event kicked off with a presentation by Mr Gbenga Totoyi, the Group Head of Human Resources at Consolidated Hallmark Insurance and Partner at Alan & Grant. Speaking on the theme, Mr Totoyi emphasized that "the future is now," highlighting the pivotal role of Artificial Intelligence and the skills required to excel in the modern workplace. Totoyi stressed a significant shift from traditional job roles to skill-based competencies, noting that academic and professional qualifications are crucial but warning against graduating with outdated skills. He highlighted the dynamic nature of the future and the importance of adaptability.
The 2nd speaker, Mr Jayeola Okuazun, the Executive Director at Business Apple, delivered an insightful session on "Leveraging Technology and Innovation for the Future of Work – Landing Global Opportunities and Gigs." Students learned how to engage with technology to enhance their global employability.
Ms. Chinenye Agwuncha, a certified Human Resource Professional, concluded the presentations by discussing how to utilize Graduate Trainee Programmes to secure entry-level positions in sectors such as Oil & Gas, banking, financial services, FMCGs, and non-governmental organizations.
In addition to the presentations, the fair featured a Career Clinic session conducted by Human Resource firms. This session helped students understand their personality types, choose appropriate career paths, and master the intricacies of resume and CV writing.
The event saw enthusiastic participation from approximately 420 students. Through this engaging and informative programme, the Career Exposition & Fair successfully bridged the gap between academia and industry, equipping students with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in the competitive job market.
