CHANCELLOR IDENTIFIES EMPHASIS ON LEARNING OVER CHARACTER AS EDUCATION GAP AT THE 13TH MATRICULATION OF 1044 STUDENTS
The Chancellor and Chairman of the Board of Regents of Landmark University, Dr David Oyedepo reiterated that Landmark University was built to bridge the character-building gap in Nigeria’s educational system. The Chancellor made this known at the 13th Matriculation ceremony of Landmark University held in the Multipurpose Hall on Friday, February 3, 2023. He pointed out that the gap had been unnoticed as universities which are to raise graduates worthy in character and learning had prioritized learning above character.
According to the Chancellor, the character gap had resulted in “many educated derelicts” and “a lot of university graduates who are Drug Addicts.” In addition, he said, “a number have lost their lives” while “some others are locked up in prison houses around the world” because of this unnoticed gap. “It is this Gap that our University System is out to fill. We have no business getting involved in education if we have nothing extra to offer. We believe that Capacity without Character is sure to lead to an Aborted Destiny or Destiny Collapse all together,” he said.
He disclosed that the university had been receiving highly laudatory reports from its graduates all over the world, including Nigeria, because of the distinctive mode of university education it offers, which advocates a "Departure from the Traditions of Schooling to the Dynamics of Training to secure the future of our students."
Having admitted the 1044 students – 978 undergraduate and 66 postgraduate – into the prestigious institution for the 2022-2023 Academic session to pursue their various degrees from the four colleges of the University, the Chancellor called for the unalloyed cooperation of parents in the training of their children while pledging the commitment of the University to give them the right kind of education encapsulated in the University’s founding philosophy and driven by the Core Values.
“You have sent them here Raw; you’ll be receiving them back Well-refined. Some may have been a bit of a concern, but you’ll be surprised at the Positive Changes they will be returning with,” he concluded.
In the same vein, the Pro-Chancellor, Pastor Mrs Faith Oyedepo espoused the commitment of the University to its mandate of delivering quality education based on character and learning that would launch fresh students into the realms of possibilities and advancements. Pastor Mrs Oyedepo tasked the fresh students to see their matriculation as an opportunity to reaffirm commitment towards driving their goals as well as align with the vision and values of the University to help them achieve them. She, therefore, emphasized on their commitment to spiritual growth being the arrowhead of the University’s Core Values, hard work and taking responsibility as the 3 keys to maximizing their stay at Landmark University.
While giving her remarks, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Charity Aremu, enumerated the numerous awards and achievements of both staff and students of the University. “Outstanding academic performances and other Awards for our faculty base have been on the increase. In the last 3 sessions, four of our faculty have and are still enjoying TWAS grants for research and also for post-doctoral fellowships,” she stated. In addition, she stated that 14 of the members of the faculty ranked among the Top 500 Nigerian Authors in 2022 by SciVal.
“In the just concluded 2022 Science to Product Africa Initiative (S2P Africa) awards, King Omolewa David, from Mechanical Engineering, programme, returned with three awards totaling in hundreds of dollars respectively,” she added. The Vice-Chancellor, therefore, further attributed the outstanding feats of the University to the facility support system such as the state of art engineering equipment, ultra-modern laboratories, financial support for conferences and publications, stable power, water and internet services, IT infrastructured classrooms, E-library facilities among others; and quality faculty and staff base which signposted the commitment of the Proprietor base to quality education delivery.
Earlier, the Registrar, Mr Olushola Oyinloye had reinforced the vision of the University, noting that “The vision of Landmark University was born out of a passion for change. That is why we have always claimed that Landmark is beyond an institution of higher learning but indeed a university that is leading a revolution in education. Our custom-built programmes prepare our students for creative, innovative and productive living.” He, then, admonished all matriculating students to catch a vision here at Landmark that would propel them toward their glorious future.
The 13th Matriculation was well attended by parents of the matriculating students both physically and virtually. Some of them gave their goodwill messages noting the impact of the total education offering at Landmark University on their children within a few weeks of contact with the institution. They included Deaconess Temilola Makasore, Deacon Olaolu Solomon and Engr (Dr) Ogunjirin.
