“We are here to celebrate you and I. Workers day is the celebration of the tenacity and contributions of the average Nigerian worker.” These were the words of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Mathew Ola-Rotimi Ajayi at the event organized by the Management of Landmark University to commemorate the nation’s workers day.

On the 1st of May, 2013, the entire Landmark University community joined the rest of Nigeria to celebrate the nation’s Workers day. The event which took place at the University Multipurpose Hall started at 10.00am.

The event witnessed a Staff/Student Parley on the topic “Curbing the Spate of Insecurity in Nigeria”. The discussants included two lecturers from the Departments of Political Science & Civil Engineering of the University, Dr. Agaptus Nwozor, Engr. Owamah Hillary respectively; and two students Miss Adeyemi Opeolu and Mr. Olonade. The parley was organized to enable staff and students of the University exchange ideas on a very topical issue in an open and interactive forum.

In her opening remarks, the Registrar Landmark University, Mrs. Mary Aboyade, stated that nothing meaningful could be achieved in any country bereft of security. She urged the students and staff to take advantage of the gathering in identifying the nagging issue of insecurity in the country.

The discussants agreed that, Insecurity predates the current political dispensation, a national and has its roots in the colonial era. But they equally lamented the failure of security managers to curb the malaise despite huge budgetary provisions to the sector.

To them, causes of insecurity are varied, but include: poverty, high unemployment rate, visionless leadership, distorted federal system, culture of impunity amongst the leaders, insincerity on the path of government and disenchanted youth.

The solutions, the speakers opined, include the resort to the practice of true federalism, convocation of sovereign national conference to enable the different ethnic groups determine their basis of co-existence, the entrenchment of equity, justice and equitable distribution of resources in the country’s political and economic structures.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. M. Ola-Rotimi Ajayi in his remark noted that, insecurity cut across every sphere of our lives. He enjoined the University Community to look beyond the constant blame on leadership by taking responsibility as citizens. One way to demonstrate this, he argued, is by refusal to condone evil by exposing acts detrimental to the security of our community.

Specifically he urged the students to shun the use of hard drugs and stealing, and to expose individuals and groups involved in such nefarious activities, while restating the University’s zero-tolerance for such anti-social behaviours.

In attendance at the parley were the Management of the University, led by the Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ajayi, Deans of Colleges, members of faculty, staff and students.

47TH ANNUAL CONFERENCE, LANDMARK UNIVERSITY, OMU-ARAN

CONFRENCE COMMUNIQUE

The 47th Annual Conference of the Science Association of Nigeria (SAN) held in Landmark University (LMU), Omu-Aran from Sunday 26th – Thursday 30th August, 2012. The conference tagged Omu-Aran 2012, has as its theme “the Role of Science & Technology in strategizing for Food Security”.

The opening ceremony was chaired by the Vice-Chancellor of Landmark University, Prof. Mathew Ola-Rotimi Ajayi. The keynote address was delivered by Dr. David Oyedepo, the Chancellor of Landmark University.

Over the years various strategies toward improving food production had been chorused by Science Association of Nigeria. During this period, there have been practical suggestions followed by positive solutions. To this extent, there has been positive encouragement in improving productive activity in the area of cassava, rice and yam production, to mention a few. In view of the fact that human population has never been static but has been in embarrassing surge, there is more demand for food security than is produced. This compels the need to learn new things from Scientist in and outside Nigeria to boost agricultural production for continuous sustainability of food security for ever intimidating rise in population figures there is also need, to enter into a multi-utilization phase of agricultural products not only to meet local needs but exportation countries in Africa where Nigeria is acclaimed as a giant.

There had always been challenges to Nigerian Scientists in proffering advancement to the different sectors of agricultural production. These and other evolving new challenges call for a re-strategizing to get armed for positive and imminent solutions. Some points of focus of such strategies and the recommended actions are as follows:-

Addressing the issue of change in weather vis-à-vis effects on crops, animals and humans.

Overhauling to create a need for stepped-up relevance of our Meteorological services

Academic juxtaposition of Science/ Engineering studies to agricultural production i.e. curriculum content development in our tertiary institutions must be sensitive to the need of the nation.

The need for public private partnership in primary supply of inputs, implements and tools to cooperating farmers.

Innovative/alternative agricultural implements relevant to our farmers’ financial status.

Adoptable use of biotechnology techniques for farming and farmers welfare.

Articulating considerably enduring solutions to farm produce through local use and for export.

STATE OF THE NATION

SAN noted and commenced the current efforts of Federal Government towards ensuring stable power and energy supply. SAN believes that with proper management of available resources Nigeria can become self-sufficient in power generation which can bring back industrialization. The Federals Government is encouraged to continue its efforts in achieving security of lives and property for any concrete having harvest of the dividends of scientific research efforts.
